Bathroom remodels are one of the most requested projects we do at Complete Builders Inc — and one of the most misunderstood when it comes to cost. Homeowners often come to us with a number they saw online that has nothing to do with what a real bathroom remodel costs in San Diego in 2025.
Here's the honest breakdown: what you'll actually spend, what drives costs up, and where you can save without cutting corners.
Bathroom Remodel Cost by Scope
The biggest driver of price isn't square footage — it's scope. A cosmetic refresh and a full gut-and-rebuild of the same bathroom can be $30,000 apart.
| Scope | Description | Cost Range |
|---|---|---|
| Powder Room (no shower) | Vanity, toilet, tile, paint | $8,000 – $18,000 |
| Full Bath Refresh | New fixtures, retile, vanity — no plumbing move | $12,000 – $22,000 |
| Full Bath Remodel | Full gut, new layout, custom tile, all fixtures | $22,000 – $45,000 |
| Master Bath (standard) | Large format tile, double vanity, walk-in shower | $35,000 – $60,000 |
| Master Bath (high-end) | Custom everything, heated floors, soaking tub | $60,000 – $95,000+ |
Why San Diego costs more: Labor rates in San Diego run 20–30% higher than the national average. Tile setters, plumbers, and electricians here earn more — and that's reflected in every bid you get. Be skeptical of any quote that looks like a national average number.
The Biggest Cost Drivers
1. Tile Work
Tile is the single biggest variable in bathroom remodel cost. Standard ceramic tile runs $8–$14 per square foot installed. Large-format porcelain (24"×48") runs $18–$28 installed. Handmade, natural stone, or patterned encaustic tile can run $35+ per square foot. A walk-in shower alone can have 150–250 sq ft of tile surface.
2. Plumbing Relocation
Moving a toilet, shower, or tub requires cutting into the slab (in single-story homes) or opening the subfloor (multi-story). This alone can add $3,000–$8,000 to a project. Whenever possible, we design remodels that keep plumbing in its current location — it saves real money without compromising the result.
3. Shower vs. Tub
A custom tile walk-in shower costs $6,000–$18,000 for the shower alone, depending on size and tile selection. A freestanding soaking tub adds $2,000–$8,000 for the fixture plus installation. Prefab shower units are available for $1,500–$4,000 installed if budget is the priority.
4. Permits
Any bathroom remodel that moves plumbing, adds electrical circuits, or changes the layout requires a City of San Diego building permit. Permit fees typically run $800–$2,500 for bathroom work, plus 2–4 weeks of processing time. We pull all required permits on every project — no exceptions.
What to Expect on Timeline
| Project Type | Construction Time | With Permits |
|---|---|---|
| Powder Room | 1–2 weeks | 3–5 weeks |
| Full Bath Remodel | 3–4 weeks | 5–7 weeks |
| Master Bath | 5–8 weeks | 7–12 weeks |
Where You Can Save — Without Sacrificing Quality
- Keep plumbing in place. Redesigning the layout costs significantly more. If the current layout works functionally, don't move things just to move them.
- Choose tile thoughtfully. Mixing a simple field tile with a designer accent tile gives a high-end look at a fraction of the cost of all-custom tile.
- Stock vs. custom vanities. A semi-custom vanity from a supplier like Signature Hardware or Restoration Hardware can look custom at half the price of true millwork.
- Skip the tub if you don't use it. Most homeowners don't use the tub in their master bath. A well-designed walk-in shower is faster, cheaper, and more functional.
Where You Should NOT Skimp
- Waterproofing. Behind every beautiful tile wall is either a proper waterproofing membrane or a water damage problem waiting to happen. We use Schluter Kerdi or RedGard on every shower — no exceptions.
- Ventilation. San Diego's climate is mild, but bathrooms still need proper exhaust ventilation. An undersized or missing exhaust fan leads to mold within 2–3 years.
- The rough plumbing. This is inside the walls. Once it's tiled over, you won't see it — but you'll live with it for 20 years. Don't compromise here to hit a budget number.
How CBI Prices Bathroom Remodels
Every bathroom we remodel starts with a detailed on-site assessment. We look at the existing plumbing locations, the subfloor condition, the wall structure, and the electrical panel. Our estimates itemize every line — tile material, labor, fixtures, permits, and contingency. You'll know exactly what you're getting before you sign anything.
We've been remodeling bathrooms in San Diego for over 25 years. We don't do the work in the estimate and ask for more at the end. What we quote is what you pay — unless you change the scope, in which case we bring a change order to you before any additional work begins.
